Davidovich, Gila


Gila, daughter of Esther and Mendel Davidovitz, was born on April 17, 1929 in Czechoslovakia and was raised in a small village in the Ukraine, near Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. After suffering immensely during World War Two, in August 1947, Gila immigrated to Israel. together. Gila was among those who demanded that the girls participate in the training and defense of the place. She served in Battalion 53 of the Givati ​​Brigade – the 5th Brigade in the Haganah – and was part of the Gershon Regional Defense Unit. Many of the settlements in the area, including the Negev, were bombed from the air as early as May 1948, but the first major attack on the kibbutz began on June 1, 1948, and reached its peak on the morning of the 24th of Iyar 5708 The Egyptians bombed from the air, were heavily shelled from the land and even tried to infiltrate the kibbutz by means of tanks and infantry, Exposed to the Egyptian shells, the observers were scared of their lives and thanks to them the defenders of the kibbutz were able to aim their weapons, and hit some of the Egyptian tanks. Gila was hit in the stomach with shrapnel and a few minutes later died of her wounds. Was one of the 44 fighters who fell during the War of Independence defending the kibbutz and its surroundings. She was nineteen when she fell. Gila was brought to rest in a mass grave in the military cemetery in Negba.
