Daniel, Yisrael (Tolo)

Yisrael (Tolo), son of Esther and David Daniel, was born on the 23rd of Adar, 23.3.1930 in the city of Piatra-Niametz, Romania. He immigrated to Israel as part of Youth Aliyah in the autumn of 1944. At the outbreak of the War of Independence, Yisrael enlisted together with all the friends who had immigrated with him and was sent to a training base in Givat Ada. He joined the “Al-Furutzim” battalion and went with his battalion to Jerusalem. From the base (Kiryat Anavim) he participated with the battalion in all the activities in the area. More than once, Yisrael went into battle despite illness and high fever although his commander forbade him to do so, so as not to miss a single battle. On the 10th of Iyar, May 19, 1948, near Motza on his way back to the base, his car overturned, and Yisrael was seriously wounded. He was immediately transferred to Hadassah and died a few hours later. He was buried in the military cemetery in Kiryat Anavim.
