Dana (Allen), Shimon

Son of Fernand and Shlomo. Shimon was born in Tizi-Ouzou, Algeria on February 21, 1951. In 1962, his family emigrated to France because of the danger they faced as Jews. In France, Shimon joined the Bnei Akiva youth movement and was very active. He was a counselor and coordinator of one of the branches. In 1968 Shimon immigrated to Israel with a group of members of Kibbutz Ein HaNatziv, where he joined the IDF in 1969. After the army he studied at the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem, In 1973 he married Ilana and his son Malkiel was born in 1973. Immediately after the wedding Shimon participated in the Yom Kippur War, and only then did he understand and feel that religion should be combined with security (“a Torah that does not bring about any act does not exist”). In 1977, he joined the Border Police in Kiryat Arba, where he worked in the security service and was involved in Torah study. In 1979 Shimon was diagnosed with cancer. On the 18th of Nisan 5740 (4.4.1980) he died during his service. Sergeant Shani was twenty-nine years old when he fell. He was buried in the Kiryat Arba cemetery. Survived by wife and son.
