Damin, Amnon

Son of Shoshana and Zevulun was born on 17.8.1928 in Tel Aviv, graduated cum laude from the elementary school, worked as a mechanic and later went on to train the “HaNoar HaOved” in Yagur and in Ashdot Ya’akov, where he was a member of the Palmach During the days of the struggle he was arrested by the British and placed in the Atlit camp. His friends recognized him as a quiet, withdrawn young man. In the early days of the War of Independence he accompanied the convoys of the Electric Company and also worked in this company. Afterward, Levi traveled to Jerusalem and arrived in Gush Etzion. In the Arab attack on the Gush on May 4, 1948, he was wounded by shrapnel and returned on foot to Masuot Yitzhak, bringing the harsh news of the fall of five defenders of the Russian Regiment. For a week he was horrified by what he saw there, but with the arrival of the last attack on the Bloc he went out to defend even before he recovered from his wounds. One of the survivors of Kfar Etzion told of his last stand: Amnon fought in a position until his weapon was exhausted and the enemy approached him. Suddenly he fell on one of the enemy men and with empty hands knocked him down, took out his submachine gun and continued to fight him until he knelt and fell. This was the fourth day of Iyar 5708 (May 13, 1948.) On the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949), he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
