Dahan, Shimon

Dahan, Shimon

Son of Hannah and Moshe. He was born on 13.5.1966 in Moshav Avivim in the Upper Galilee. He completed his elementary studies at the Morasha School in the moshav and continued his high school studies at the Dov Stryn Youth Village near Haifa, in the field of marine mechanics. From an early age, Shimon was endowed with diligence and devotion to his friends and family. As a member of the kibbutz, he devoted much of his time to working in the various branches of the economy and during his army service he made sure to leave every agricultural season for a short vacation of two to three days in order to reduce the burden on the family. His willingness to help others was expressed in every framework he was in. For example, on one of his trips on the northern road, he helped – together with his brother – members of Kibbutz Kabri to repair their tires. In a letter of thanks published by the same family, Shimon and his brother were nicknamed ‘Yaffa people’. Shimon was drafted into the IDF in April 1984. After completing basic training, he completed a driving course in a truck and later joined a unit in the Golan Heights, where he served as a driver and a vehicle sergeant. Toward the end of the service, when he was found worthy of professional advancement, and out of a desire to encourage his continued service in the IDF, he was offered to undergo retraining for the maintenance field. He was a devoted soldier with a very high ability, “the investor is above and beyond the standard in the unit.” In December 1989 he was promoted to the rank of major sergeant, and in February 1990 he received a certificate of excellence from the division commander. In January 1989, he married his girlfriend Etti, whom he met in the brigade during their joint service. His long stay in the Golan Heights connected him to the landscapes of the region and his men, and so he decided to build his home in Katzrin, where his son Moshe was born. On 25 February 1990, on his way to the base where he served, near Moshav Kedmat Zvi on the Golan Heights, Shimon was injured in a road accident. He suffered severe injuries to his legs and chest and was evacuated to Rambam Hospital in Haifa, where he struggled for eight days and on the 9th day of Adar 5703 (March 5, 1990) he was defeated. He was brought to rest in the Meron cemetery. Survived by his wife, son, parents, four sisters – Esther, Elisheva, Dina and Rose and three brothers – Amram, Shaul and Kobi. His family published in his memory a booklet containing the words of friends, commanders, and family members. Each page of the booklet shows the character of a friendly and friendly man, dedicated and energetic. In a letter of condolence to his wife, the unit commander wrote: “Shimon was a symbol of industriousness and exemplary work, and he spent his days in the Golan Heights and in the brigade improving and improving the skills of the current security and emergency. In his last words, they ordered: “They continued to deal with the outposts and reserve soldiers”
