Coleman, Avigdor
Son of Yitzhak was born in 1917 in a small and remote village in Hungary. In the nearby town he attended high school. When he moved to Budapest to study the textile profession, he came into contact with Zionist circles and in 1939 immigrated to Israel as an immigrant. After years of shaking and difficulties at work, he joined the British army in 1942, passed the Al-Alamain system, served in North Africa and reached Europe. He managed to penetrate Hungary and learned that his entire family had perished. When he returned to Israel, he set up a small weaving house for himself. At the outbreak of the War of Independence he was drafted into the army. Despite his poor health, he chose to go to combat service and served in the Golani Brigade in the Upper Galilee and in the security of the Safed-Rosh Pina road. Avigdor was killed on May 9, 1948, when he was riding a mine, and was buried in Mahanayim on September 21, 1949. He was transferred to the eternal military cemetery in Haifa.
