Cohen, Zvi


Son of Ita and Ze’ev, was born in 1902 in Dzigovka, Ukraine, where his father served as rabbi. As a child, they were circumcised. He studied in the “Heder” and “Yeshiva” and was ordained to be a teacher. Afterward he began studying secular studies and took external exams in a high school in 1920. He immigrated to Israel and worked as a laborer in stone-cutting (among other things he participated in the construction of the palace of the Emir Abdullah in Amman). Later on he went to work as a clerk, studied at the law school, was ordained a lawyer and worked in this profession in Jerusalem. Zvi devoted himself to research work in Jewish law and published a file of judgments of the Supreme Court. Zvi fulfilled his duty in the Haganah and in the War of Independence served as commander of the region. In his service, he was hit by a shell and fell on the day of 16 May 1948. He was buried in Sheikh Bader Aleph. Left a wife and son. On the 28th of Elul 5710 (10.9.1950) he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
