Cohen, Yosef (Jojo)

Son of-Phoebe and Yemin was born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1943. Joseph, who was affectionately named by many friends as Jojo, completed his studies at the Ort vocational school in Casablanca as an electrician, and in 1965 Yosef immigrated to Israel and settled in Be’er Sheva “He worked as an electrician in the Solel Boneh garages in the city, but soon opened his own garage and found his livelihood with dignity, and was drafted into the IDF at the end of November 1967. In the reserve service Joseph completed various courses, and was finally assigned heavy mortars. Joseph served in the reserves during the Yom Kippur War, and was given the signal of battle and the signal of operational service. On the 23rd of Av 5744 (23.8.1984), Corporal Joseph fell in the line of duty and was put to rest in the military cemetery in Be’er Sheva. He left behind a wife, two daughters and a son, and four brothers. In his letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “The late Yosef Cohen served as a combat soldier in the mortar division of the unit since its establishment in 1967. We, his friends and commanders in the unit, remember Yossi Cohen as a friend and a true partner in the reserves. The separation from the family and the garage made the reserve burden more respectable, but the late Yossi Cohen had his own way of giving, helping and facilitating his friends in the joint service.
