Cohen, Yosef

Yosef, son of Sultana and David Cohen, was born in 1895 in the Old City of Jerusalem. He was the son of a family that had immigrated from Morocco. He was a friendly man, helping the needy, and especially devoting himself to caring for the deceased that they should have a proper burial. After the outbreak of the War of Independence and the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem, Yosef was one of the defenders of the “People’s Guard.” One day, while standing as guard at a checkpoint on Malachi Street, a shell fell near him and he was seriously wounded. He died on the 29th of Sivan (6.7.1948), after spending a month in the hospital. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. Yosef left behind his wife and their two children.
