Cohen Yochananoff, Eliahu Chai

Was born in Jerusalem in 1933. He was a descendant of the Yohananoff family, which immigrated from Bukhara in 1874. Eliahu Chai was named after his late father who drowned in the port of Haifa before he was born. He was a Yaffa boy with a tall, intelligent body. He did his studies, as was customary at that time in a “cheder” and an ultra-Orthodox school. His mother, Mazal, remarried and had six children. At the beginning of the War of Independence, Eliahu Chai found his way to Gadna and served as a liaison between the different positions in the besieged city. On December 9, 1948, he died without being recognized again. He was buried in the cemetery in Sheikh Bader in Jerusalem. In 1951 he was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem
