Cohen, Yechezkel (Julius)

Yechezkel, son of Yati and Yaakov Cohen, was born on May 26, 1929 in the city of Mainz, Germany. In 1939 he immigrated to Israel with his parents and studied at the Horev religious elementary school in Jerusalem. He continued his studies at the Kol Torah Yeshiva, but after a year of studies he stopped and went to work as an electrician. When he was 17, he joined the ranks of the Haganah in Jerusalem. At the outbreak of the War of Independence, Yechezkel immediately came to the defense of Jerusalem. Together with his friends, who were the “elite class”, he joined the “Moriah” battalion and participated in the battles on Mount Scopus, Wadi Joz, Jaffa Gate, Mount Zion and other various edicts of Jerusalem. On June 9, 1948, Yechezkel fell in an Arab building in the Muzarra neighborhood, which served as an Arab attack base in the Mea She’arim neighborhood and Batei Ungerin. While inside the house, when he connected the explosive device, he was hit by an enemy bullet. He was buried in Sheikh Bader A. On September 10, 1950, he was transferred to the military cemetery at Har Herzl in Jerusalem.
