Cohen, Yaakov (Jacques)


Yaakov, son of Sarah and Eliyahu Cohen, was born in 1912 in Yugoslavia. In his city he completed elementary school and tried to make ends meet, but was unable to assimilate in the life of his foreign homeland and in 1932 immigrated to Eretz Israel. He had a wife and two sons and earned a living selling coffee and tea. At the outbreak of the War of Independence, he served first in the “People’s Guard” and later as a full-time conscript. Yaakov was killed by an enemy shell on 2 Sivan, June 9, 1948 and was buried in Sheik Badar. He was transferred to the military cemetery at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem on 10.9.1950.
