Cohen, Shmuel


Shmuel (Shmulik), son of Madeleine and Isidore, was born on December 2, 1952, in Herzliya. Shmulik studied at the Gordon Elementary School in Herzliya and continued his high school studies in electronics at the Max Payne High School in Tel Aviv. he was a pleasant boy with good manners. In elementary school, he proved to be a diligent student who did not rest until he achieved his goals Shmulik was an artist and his paintings decorated the walls in his room and in his class room Samuel was active in the social life of the school, was elected as a member of the decoration committee and participated in the celebrations and the travels. His shyness and modesty made him many friends, old and young. Shmulik was devoted and always ready to help others, restrained in the manifestation of his feelings. Moro tells how once, when injecting injections of vaccination to students, Shmuel felt ill, but he did not dare to ask permission to go outside. Shmulik knew that duty must be fulfilled, and when the teacher took his hand and went outside with him to breathe fresh air, the boy explained that he did not want to discourage his already frightened friends. Shmulik was a good and loyal friend. His hearty smile always reflected a mood of inner peace. He chose to study in an electronic program, in hi school since before he had paid as an electronics technician, he spent his leisure time working in electricity. During his high school years he devoted himself to studying the electrical profession, sought to know the secrets of light science, but did not abandon the art of painting. Moreover, Shmulik’s paintings were sent to youth exhibitions held in Jerusalem, and were warmly appreciated. Shmulik was a member of the Hanoar Haoved movement, took part in sports and hiking activities, and was very active in the Gadna, Shmuel was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in early February 1971, and after completing basic training he was assigned to the IDF. Shmulik excelled in his position and completed two courses for a communications technician. In his unit, Shmulik was known as an excellent soldier and a devoted friend. One of his friends told army service: “Shmulik belonged to the type of people that anyone who was in his company could immediately see his willingness to cooperate and his willingness to follow in. Even when the work was difficult and unpleasant, he did not object to it and was prepared to fulfill any task. On October 12, 1973, Shmuel was hit by an anti-tank fire and was killed. He was laid to rest in the city cemetery in Herzliya. Survived by father, mother, and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to First Sergeant.
