Cohen-Rotblit, Tzila


Daughter of Bronia and Yitzhak Cohen. She was born on March 27, 1915 in Lodz, Poland. In her hometown she studied at the Hebrew Gymnasium, and during her studies she was active in the Gordonia youth movement, where she stood out first as an apprentice and then as a counselor. In 1934, she immigrated to Eretz Israel as a student at the Hebrew University, but immediately joined the movement’s settlement nucleus in Rehovot. After that, members of the group moved to Kiryat Anavim in the Judean Hills and after the murder of five members of the group who were involved in preparing land and paving a road by an Arab gang and founding the “Maale Hachamisha” kibbutz, was one of the founders of this new kibbutz. Along with her work as a member of the Gordonia national leadership, she served as a member of the Haganah, and at the same time went through a training course for children and devoted time to educating and training the youth. On 10 Nisan, 24 March 1945, she was killed in an attack by Arab bandits who ambushed the group on the slopes of the mountain. She was buried in the cemetery of Maale HaChamisha.
