Cohen, Robert
Son of Marcel and Moshe, was born on May 7, 1964 in Holon to a family that had immigrated from Egypt. At his parents’ home, Robert caught the Arabic language and at a young age moved with his parents to live in Bat Yam. He completed his studies at the “Hanassi” school and the “Shazar” high school, in a social program – both in Bat Yam. Robert was a sports fan of all branches and was particularly active in fencing and light athletics competitions. In August 1982, he enlisted in the IDF and served in the Intelligence Corps, where he underwent training in basic training, served as a training instructor at the IDF Air Force base, and served for some time as a wireless operator. In July 1983, he was promoted to the rank of corporal, and in his commanding opinion, “He has the potential and motivation to advance in his position.” Robert was sent to an officers’ course and a parachuting course, and successfully completed both. During the Peace for the Galilee war, Robert was sent with part of his unit to the front in southern Lebanon, to a region where there was a great deal of terrorist activity. On March 14, 1985, Robert was injured in an operational accident and was killed. He was 20 years old when he died. After he fell, he was promoted to lieutenant. He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Holon. Robert left behind his parents and brother. His name was immortalized in the library that was named after him at the Shazar high school where he studied, as well as in the training unit of the corps that named after him the “Robert Exercise.” The commander of his unit wrote about him in a letter of condolence to his family: “Immediately upon his arrival in the battalion, Robert went out with his brigade to operational activities in Lebanon, and was very talented, thorough, dedicated and above all friendly. And most important to the unit and the IDF “
