When he left the orphanage, he worked in carpentry and got well. Even in his youth, he joined the Haganah and took part in underground activities. In 1943, he joined the Palmach, joined the hachshara in Ashdot Yaakov and participated in activities against the British authorities in Sarona, the “Night of the Bridges”, the immigration of illegal immigrants, etc. After the “Black Sabbath” (29.6.1946) In the War of Independence he fought in the Harel Brigade in the Jerusalem front, and Nehemiah took part in the breakthrough to Sha’ar Hagai and the occupation of outposts in the area. He was injured in the breakthrough to the Old City, miraculously saved, and returned home for a short vacation. Neither the requests of the family nor the entreaties of his fiancee made him wait until at least he had recovered completely. Nehemiah went back to the front and took part in a counter-attack on the Radar hill near Maaleh Hahamisha, after the site was conquered by the Arab Legion. This action, on 17 May 1948, did not return. He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Kiryat Anavim.
