Cohen, Natan


The son of Henya and Chaim was born in Petah Tikva on July 16, 1926. He studied at the “She’erit Yisrael” school, later at the Rabbi Amiel Yeshiva and at the “Mizrachi” teachers’ seminary in Jerusalem. From his youth, he was a peace seeker, and would seperate quarreling children. He admired his parents, was polite and quiet and was a member of the Haganah since his youth. When the War of Independence broke out he Natan was one of the first to enlist. He participated in the battles in the zone of the shefelah, Tel Litvinsky, Arabic Kfar Saba, Santora, Kakoon and Tira. He was a soldier in the religious division of the Alexsandroni batallion and later was transferred to the Negev. He wrote home “The city of Beersheva where Abraham and Isaac fought against Avimelech, was redeemed by their sons.” During Operation Horev, a “liquidation” operation was carried out against the “Faluja pocket” in which an Egyptian brigade was besieged, the Alexandroni forces broke into the village from the south and took control of it. In the meantime the Egyptians regained strength and forced our soldiers to retreat. Natan was killed in this battle on the 26th of Kislav, December 28, 1948and was buried in Faluja. On the 17th of Kislev 5710 (8.12.1949) he was transferred to the eternal rest of the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
