Cohen, Moshe

Moshe, son of Frieda and Reuven Cohen, was born on December 4, 1928 in the city of Alexandria, Egypt. He attended a Jewish school. Moshe was influenced by the presence of the Zionist soldiers and the Zionist youth movements, and especially by underground activities in Palestine who worked to liberate themselves from the British yoke. In February 1947 he boarded a train for Israel. Moshe joined the Irgun and in the winter of 1948, after the War of Independence began, he participated in its war activities against the Arabs in the Tel Aviv area and especially in the occupation of Manshiyet in Jaffa. After the declaration of the state and the invasion of the Arab armies he joined his comrades in the Israel Defense Forces. Moshe excelled in battles with coolness and courage, and especially liked the night patrols. In the Jewish conquest he fought with heroism and with ammunition in hand, he attacked an Iraqi armored vehicle. Hearing that his brothers who remained in Egypt, and had expected to follow after him, were arrested on charges of Zionism, Moshe turned his anger against the Egyptians. He asked to fight against the Egyptians, promising, “I will fix them.” When he was transferred to a combat unit in the Givati Brigade on the southern front, he was given his request. Moshe went with his company to attack the Egyptian “Burma Road” outposts south of the Iraq-Suiden police and fell in battle on the 1st of Cheshvon, November 3, 1948. He was laid to rest at the Warburg military cemetery.
