Cohen, Meir Shlomo (Miro)


Son of Rika and Pinchas. Born in 1947 in Casablanca, Morocco, immigrated to Israel with his family in 1958 and lived in Tiberias. Meir was educated in a state religious elementary school in Tiberias and in the “Hachuv Hashomer” agricultural school in Petah Tikva. He completed his high school studies at the Aliyah school in Kfar Avraham. He was a member of the Bnei Akiva youth movement and even taught in the movement. He has been involved in light athletics and swimming and has participated in many marches. Before his enlistment in the IDF, his family moved to Be’er Sheva, where he joined the IDF in the middle of August 1966 and volunteered for the Paratroopers Brigade. After training, he was taken to the Shaked reconnaissance unit. In 1967 he participated in the Six-Day War. Upon completion of his regular service he continued to serve in his unit as part of a permanent army. He participated in the Yom Kippur War, fought in Sinai, and in the Suez Canal. This year he married Gilo and established an extensive family. After the peace treaty with Egypt, his unit, later Givati, moved to Ketziot. In 1982, he requested a transfer to the Southern Command headquarters so that he could study in the evening at the Ma’ayan yeshiva. Meir was a sensitive person, loved to help others, contributed to needy families, to synagogues, yeshivas and institutions. He was especially good at honoring his parents and family. The love of the land had been ingrained in him since childhood. In the field of teaching, he did external courses in education and on school vacations. His professional career in the regular army was gastronomy. He was trained in military courses and at the Tadmor Hotel and completed paratroop training courses on November 10, 1985. He was buried at the military cemetery on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and left behind a wife, two sons – Dvir Pinhas and two daughters – Inbal and Daughter of-El, parents, four brothers and four sisters – Shalom, David, Yehoshua, Rahamim, Dina, Sima, Esther and Aliza.
