Cohen, Meir


Son of Chava and Amram, was born on January 2, 1961 in Jerusalem. On his mother’s side Meir was the seventh generation in the country. His father immigrated to Israel from Morocco upon the establishment of the state. Meir began his studies at the elementary school in Beit Shemesh, continued at the Pardes State Religious School in Jerusalem, and graduated with honors from the “Himpelarb” religious high school in the biological track. Meir was a talented boy, and his outstanding feature was modesty. In every conversation he conducted, he gave a pleasant atmosphere to those around him. Towards the end of his studies, Meir joined the ranks of the Civil Guard, proving his seriousness and responsibility. Meir was drafted into the IDF in mid-July 1979 and volunteered for the paratroopers, and after completing basic training he successfully passed various courses: parachuting, APC course, battalion training course, sabotage course and infantry commander course. After finishing the course of the squad commanders, Meir was appointed as a parachutist in one of the paratroop units. He fulfilled his role successfully and his commanders, who insisted on his character and characteristics, sent him to an officer’s course. Meir graduated from the course as an outstanding trainee. With the rank of deputy commander on his shoulders, he served as a platoon commander in a paratroopers unit, and when the Peace for Galilee War broke out, Meir went with his unit to Lebanon and fought in its head to the outskirts of Beirut.On the 23rd of Sivan 5742 (13.6.1982) Meir was raised to the rank of lieutenant, and he left behind his parents, a brother who serves as an officer in the regular army, and two sisters.In his letter of condolence to the bereaved family, Minister Meir described Meir’s qualities as “a high-caliber, high-level officer.” A Torah library in his name and in his memory was brought by his family to the conference hall The Etzion Bloc in Raanana.
