Cohen, Gabriel (“Gabi”)

Cohen, Gabriel (“Gabi”)

Son of Efraim HaKohen and Shoshana. He was born with his twin sister on July 7, 1947 in Jerusalem. Their mother died at birth and they grew up without a mother. Gabi studied at the Moriah religious elementary school and excelled in his studies. After graduating from elementary school, he had to go to work to help his father, who was now married to a second wife. His father and stepmother were almost destitute and could not give Gabriel an education or teach him a profession. Gabriel understood this and with his own strength he learned the profession of cooling and worked in it. He was a quiet, pleasant, and very friendly boy. On Saturdays he used to gather children around him and teach them religious studies. Gabriel wanted to ask for a postponement, but Gabriel did not want to hear his father’s voice this time and went out to serve his homeland, and Gabi was drafted into the IDF in early February 1966 and volunteered to serve in a combat unit. For two years he served the country faithfully, but his father saw that he could not overcome the difficulties of earning a living and asked his son’s commanders to release him for a long time, so that he would come to the aid of the family. During this period Gabriel learned another profession – diamond polishing. He worked overtime to increase his income for the family. He loved his parents and the family and took care of everything at home and even the education of the other children, who were born over time. In mid-November 1969 he was called up for active reserve duty and after his return was about to marry him, but he did not receive it. Two days after leaving for reserve duty he came home on a four-day vacation and said he would use them to get rid of some of his duties. He went to his twin sister and told her: “I’m going to reserve duty and I feel a strange feeling in my Lev. After returning to his unit, he fell in a bazooka attack in the Jordan Valley and was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, after which the father acquired a Torah scroll and donated it to the Ohel Mo’ed synagogue in the house And a garden in Jerusalem, which he brought to the synagogue on Gabriel’s birthday.
