Cohen, Daniel (“Danny”)

Son of Maxim and Carmela. He was born on 10/25/1945 in Haifa, studied at the Reali School and continued his high school studies at the military boarding school in the same school. Danny was a member of the “Hallelujah” club and on behalf of the club he was included in the Israeli national team and represented the country in international competitions in Israel and abroad (Cyprus, Turkey and Germany). He loved to go underwater fishing and more than anything he liked to hunt. Daniel was the coordinator of Hapoel in his residence, and before Assaf fell to build a handball field. Daniel was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in early September 1963. He joined the regular army in mid-March 1966. During his service he served as a brave fighter and as an excellent officer, and he became famous as one of the operators of the armored tractors plowing on the Syrian border in the period preceding the war After completing his service in the Golan Heights, he decided to go to the Technion and continue his studies, and planned to do so within the framework of the IDF. He moved with his infant son to a settlement where his wife’s parents lived and soon became part of the local society. Even though his service in the home front did not give up operational operations in the northern region. He participated in the explosion of the Jordan Canal (the water system established by the Jordanians in the Jordan Valley), in which the success of this action depended. Danny’s commanders, from his direct commander to the commander of the command, were very appreciative. They were able to cherish his qualities and virtues as an outstanding officer, courageous and cold-tempered, yet a friend and exemplary friend. Danny was also popular with the residents of the villages in the north. He never gave up on an opportunity to help others. One of the friends told Danny that he was a good friend, whose true nature was discovered in times of trouble. In difficult times you could count on him in everything. On the 27th of Adar 2, 5702 (April 2, 1970), Captain Daniel was killed in a shell attack on Nachal Geshur and brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Haifa, and a week later, Daniel was promoted to the rank of Major. In May 1970, a long article was published about Daniel in Ma’ariv: “The handball field in his seat, which was completed after they fell, is named after him:” Hapoel Danny – Ramat Yishai “.
