Cohen-Brezsky, Israel

Israel, son of Yentil and Yaakov Cohen-Brezsky, was born on March 13, 1928 in Jerusalem. From his childhood, he was educated in the spirit of Torah and tradition in his parents’ home in the Old City and studied in the “Etz Chaim” Talmud Torah. As he grew older, he began to work in the diamond profession and eventually acquired a polishing machine and worked at his parents’ home. As a member of the Irgun underground, he was imprisoned in the Old City and sent to the Latrun camp for three months, and when he returned from the camp he returned to his underground activities. With the start of the War of Independence he joined the defense of the Old City and did not leave until his last day. On May 16, 1948, he was in Nissan Bek’s position and was the last fighter there. Standing up, he attacked the enemy who fought down until the Arabs, many of whom had fallen from their bullets, blew up the wall and Israel was shot in the head. He was transferred to Misgav Ladach Hospital where he died the next day, on May 16, 1948. He was brought to eternal rest in the Old City of Jerusalem.
