Cohen, Avner

Born on Monday, July 31, 1965 in Herzliya, Avner attended the Herzl elementary school and finished the real-chemical trend in high school – both in Herzliya. Avner used to sing and play for many hours, and he listened to pop music, and especially loved the Pink Floyd songs, Avner was loved by his friends for his sense of humor and the cheerfulness that surrounded him. He invested in the cultivation of the garden in which he lived, and even built a Yaffa rock garden in the garden, where Avner traveled extensively among the orchards and the beach. He wanted to volunteer for the paratroopers, and in order to increase his physical fitness, he started running exhausting long runs and even practiced at the Institute for Physical Fitness. Avner was drafted into the IDF in the middle of August 1983. As mentioned, he asked to volunteer for the paratroopers, but the quota was already filled and therefore was stationed in the medical corps. After basic training he underwent a combat paramedics course, completed successfully and was trained as a combat medic. He was stationed in a unit in the north of the country, served to the satisfaction of his commanders and was a disciplined soldier, fond of his friends and acquaintances. On January 31, 1948, Avner fell in the line of duty and was put to rest at the military cemetery in Herzliya. He left parents, brother and sister. In his letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “Despite his brief service, Avner stood out in his unit with his kindness, his attitude toward his friends and commanders, and his professional ability.” His memory is commemorated in “The Book of the Fallen Sons of Herzliya”
