Cohen, Avner


Son of Shimon (HaKohen) and Esther (Tita). He was born on October 22, 1956, in Acre. He began his studies at the Weizmann elementary school in Acre and finished with high grades, and all the teachers in the school liked him and knew that he was talented and gifted from the rest of the students, and the teacher Mina Ofer even recommended that the parents enroll him in the Gifted School in Jerusalem. He preferred to study at the Reali school in Haifa, as part of the military boarding school, Avner behaved according to the slogan of this school, “… and humbleness.” He did not patronize, was disciplined, and his friends loved and admired him. His contemporaries knew Avner as a man who loved to share with each other He was a friendly and reasonable man, yet he listened to light music, and he loved to listen to the songs of Arik Einstein, and the Beatles’ songs, and To the songs of Stevie Wonder and Elton John, and Avner was drafted into the IDF in late October 1974 and volunteered for the Armored Corps. After basic training he was transferred to the Armored Corps School. He completed his course in tank studies and was certified as a liaison officer. He also took a course in command and control, officers’ courses, officers’ training courses, and officers’ training course. After his officers’ training course, Avner was attached to an operational battalion and was appointed deputy commander of a company, and his commander, who was asked to give him professional opinions, estimated this: “A responsible and dedicated officer who stood out in his peace of mind. He filled a large number of positions and assignments in the battalion and was successful in all of them thanks to his sense of responsibility and his companies. A quiet and peaceful officer who stood out in his kindness and in the attitude of his friends. In the end of March 1977, Avner was seriously injured in a road accident, and after a long struggle for his life he fell in the line of duty on 18 Nissan 5737 6 January 1977. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “For a long time, Avner was standing with all the soldiers in the unit on difficult tests. The heavy burden of preserving the land and its security, and in this effort Avner stood out in his peace of mind, his kindness and his ability to carry out tasks that were imposed on him perfectly. A model for his friends and soldiers. ” His father notes that Avner was devoted to the parents and fulfilled the mitzvah of honoring one’s father and mother, as it is written in the Ten Commandments: “For the sake of your days.” But he did not last long and was plucked like a flower in the middle of his 21st year.
