Son of Shulamit and Lizer-Natan was born on January 16, 1925 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to three sisters and three brothers, and was a member of a Zionist youth movement in his native country. He immigrated to Switzerland in 1944. In 1945 he immigrated to Israel and settled in Ramat Gan, where his daughter Shulamit was born in 1946. After immigrating to Israel he joined the Haganah and was active member of the Haganah. To support the family, Assaf worked as a print in Haaretz, a position that was considered vital at the time, because in this edition other things were printed besides the newspaper. On the 9th of Iyar 5708 (18.5.1948) Assaf was killed when enemy aircraft were bombed on Tel Aviv. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
