Cohen, Asher (Felix)

Cohen, Asher (Felix)

He was born on April 23, 1942 in the city of Breslau, Germany. He began his studies in elementary school but his studies were interrupted by the “Kristallnacht” events. He was arrested with his father and transferred to a concentration camp where he was employed in paving roads. In 1939, he immigrated to Israel as part of the Youth Aliyah and arrived in Kfar Haim. His absorption was slow and hard; He was worried about the fate of his parents and the rest of his family and found no peace. Finally he was absorbed in the youth group and joined the settlement organization that was held in Beit Eshel. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he enlisted in the British Transport Corps, but even after his enlistment he maintained ties with the members of Beit Eshel and sent them his few savings to buy a cart. In the ranks of his company, he also served in the Western Desert and participated in the battle for Tobruk. On 27 Nisan, May 1, 1943, he was with his company on the ship “Arinapura”, accompanied by a large convoy that led the soldiers of the Allied armies to Malta. In a large attack of the enemy planes, the ship sank with 140 Jewish soldiers from Eretz Israel, among them. In the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, a ship-shaped monument was erected in memory of the missing, and next to it is a water pool with the names of the fallen engraved on the bottom. This fallen hero is a “maklan” – a hero whose burial place is unknown.
