Cohen, Abraham
Son of Regina and Avad-Avraham was born in Tel Aviv on June 16, 1931. He studied at a Talmud Torah in the Neve Shalom neighborhood, but due to the economic situation at home, he was forced to work at an early age to help his family. At any moment he would rush to the sea to look at his waves or swim and row in a boat, and his great dream in his short life was to become a sailor and see the world. In his training, he proved adhering to the goal: during training for crossing a river, his boat overturned and one of the rifles fell into the water; Without hesitation Abraham hurried to dive into the water and drink the sinking rifle. Avraham took part in the conquest of Jaffa, and in the act of conquering the Jewish village he displayed special courage when he stopped an enemy tank until the reinforcements arrived. When the Irgun joined the IDF, Avraham’s dream was fulfilled, he was about to join the navy he desired, but before he fulfilled his wishes he fell in the line of duty. On June 22, 1948, while he was trying to help his comrades on the Irgun’s Altalena, he swam toward her and was critically wounded by shrapnel from shells fired at the ship. On June 23, 1948, he died of his wounds in a hospital. For the eternal rest of the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak, commemorated in the Etzel memorial book “Zikrem-Netzach”.
