Chernichovsky, Shaul

Born on 5 October 1951 in Chile, Shaul studied at the Hebrew elementary school in Argentina and at the military high school, and then went on to study psychology, was a member of the Zionist youth movement in Argentina and in 1971 immigrated to Israel alone Shaul immigrated to Israel in 1977. In July 1972 Shaul was drafted into the IDF. He completed basic training and was stationed in the air force, in the anti-aircraft unit, and was sent to a special course for anti-aircraft units and to a squadron commander’s course, at the end of which he received the rank of corporal. He continued his course in the officers’ training course and was trained in an anti-aircraft officer course. He joined the command and served as a company commander and deputy commander of the battery, and in 1974 Shaul signed a career army service and was assigned to serve in the training staff at the Naval School. In his opinion on officers, his commanders wrote: “Shaul demonstrated responsibility and dedication, showed great motivation and excelled in training positions.” In 1977 Shaul moved to the Armored Corps. He passed the Armored Corps course from the beginning, studied the tank professions and went on to an officer’s course. At the end he was sent to serve as an Armored Corps officer in one of the armored units, and later served as a training officer and as a commanding officer. In 1984, Shaul completed his army service. In the middle of April 1992 Shaul was called to active reserve duty. He went to his unit to serve as security officer in the Cave of the Patriarchs. On April 22, 1992, he fell in the line of duty. He was forty years old when he fell. Shaul was brought to eternal rest in the Kiryat Shaul military cemetery. Survived by Raya – Hannah and two sons – Ron and Nadav, parents, brother and sister – Sara. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the unit commander wrote: “In the short period that Shaul spent in the unit, you could see the good education he received in your home.
