Charles, Haim (Cornell)


Chaim, son of Orlia and Aharon, was born on August 24, 1950, in Bucharest, Romania, and when he was ten months old he immigrated with his family to Israel. For four years the family lived in the “Shomron” transit camp near Nahalal, and then settled in Tirat Hacarmel near Haifa. was drafted into the IDF in early November 1968. During his service, he underwent a tank training course, a tank artillery course and a tank commander course. After being stationed in an armored unit he participated in the battles of the War of Attrition. In mid-November 1971, when Haim completed compulsory service, he began to study mechanical engineering at the Technion. As usual, had excelled in his studies and yet had not abandoned his hobbies since childhood. Together with his friend he edited a booklet that dealt with the life of his battalion and sent it as a souvenir to the battalion. He purchased four cameras and concentrated especially on landscape photography. Chaim was an avid nature lover, loved to travel and had almost no corner in the country, which he did not visit. During the Yom Kippur War, he fought on the southern front in the battle against the Egyptians. On October 18, 1973, he was hit and fell in a battle near the Chinese Farm. He was brought to eternal rest in the Haifa cemetery. Survived by his parents and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to First Sergeant.
