Chaniya, Matan


Matan, son of Chanah and Alon Chaniya, was born in Netanya in 1993. His parents chose the names Or or Gil, but after the birth there was an emergency, they realized that they had received a special gift and decided on the name Matan. He grew up in the village of Daughter of Hefer. On November 21, 2011, Matan joined the IDF. He was well prepared for recruitment, and towards the end of high school he participated in a combat fitness course in order to get ready for military service. Prior to the enlistment, Matan was invited to participate in a reconnaissance day and was drafted into the Rotem Battalion in the infantry brigade. In November 2012, Matan took part in the “Amud Anan” campaign in Gaza, served in the Hebron area and Mount Dov on the Lebanese border. Matan advanced to the rank of sergeant. Matan fell during his duty on 3 Sivan, 12.5.2013. He was nineteen and a half years old when he fell. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Netanya. Survived by parents, brother and sister.
