Chalfen, Nahum


Was born on February 1, 1917 in the town of Lefkane, in the region of Bessarabia, Romania, where he acquired a popular education, and in 1936 he was granted a permit to immigrate to Israel. Nachum worked temporarily in the harvest, tried diamond polishing, then worked as a carpenter and plasterer, married a wife, purchased a plot of land near Netanya and said to build a house for him. On partition he canceled his preparations for a trip to the United States to his brother and prepared for what was to come. In the Alexandroni Brigade he managed to serve only forty days, most of which he underwent in training. On the 16th of Iyar 5708 (16.5.1948), he went with his friends as a reinforcement to Moshav Geulim and on the day he fell on duty he was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Netanya.
