Caruana, Gabriel
Son of Shim’a and Zechariah, was born on May 25, 1964 in Rosh Ha’ayin. Gabriel was a member of a large family of children. He began studying at the “Ohel Shalom” elementary school in Rosh Ha’ayin, where he went to study at Yeshivat Rashbi in Tel Aviv and Diskin in Jerusalem and then returned to Rosh HaAyin where he studied in a vocational school. He was very interested in the frameworks, and in his work Gabriel created holy vessels, such as menorahs, candlesticks and lamps, and his friends called him “Gabi.” He was a kind, kind boy surrounded by friends. Purchased sheep and goats and set up a corner of his house near the house, and he was ahead of his army service. On April 25, 1982, Gavriel enlisted in basic training and a driver’s course. In his military service, he was employed as a driver of the deputy commander of his division. During his service, Gavriel forged strong ties with his friends in the unit. When the Peace for Galilee War broke out, he went to service in Lebanon. Gabriel was employed in transport from the front to the center of the country. On the 3 rd of Tishrei 5743 (October 3, 1982), he took the bus, which returned soldiers from their vacation to Lebanon. Near the town of Ali, the bus was ambushed by terrorists, who fired light weapons and detonated explosive devices. The number of casualties in the attack was large. Six killed and 22 wounded. Among those killed was Gabriel. He was 19 years old. He was laid to rest in the military section of the Rosh Ha’ayin cemetery. Gabriel left behind his parents, eight brothers and eight sisters. Defense Minister Ariel Sharon wrote to his family: “He was a dedicated soldier, he did his job in an excellent way.” The commander of his unit wrote: “Gabi was known for his great devotion and for the excellent performance of his position.” A Torah scroll was inserted in his name into the Beit Yaakov synagogue in Rosh Ha’ayin
