Carmi, Zev
Son of Shoshana and Zvi, was born on May 20, 1911 in Kosice, Czechoslovakia, and attended a Hungarian school. From his assimilated surroundings he found the way to the Hashomer Hatzair movement, was educated on its principles, became a guide and was accepted in 1929 as the main leadership. At the end of 1931, he immigrated to Eretz Israel and joined the “Hashomer Hatzair Alef” group of immigrants from Czechoslovakia, who united with Kibbutz Ein HaKoreh in Rishon Letzion and immigrated to his land in the Jordan Valley. Ze’ev was one of the founders of Sha’ar Hagolan and active members of the kibbutz. Was an expert dairy farmer and coordinator of the Jordan Valley Insemination Institute. He was also active in security matters. Upon the invasion of the enemy at the outbreak of the War of Independence, he was called to join the unit that was in charge of plant protection and served as a squad commander in the Golani Brigade. The Syrians invaded the Jordan Valley on May 16, 1948, took control of several of the regional authorities, but were stopped by our forces in Zemach. On May 18 the Syrians launched an attack on a plant with the help of artillery and tanks. At first, the town of Tzemach fell, and finally the police station and the defenders retreated under Syrian fire towards Degania. In this battle he fell on the 9th of Iyar 5708 (May 18, 1948.) He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Degania Aleph.
