Calfon, Eliyahu

Eliyahu, son of Shulamit and David, was born on January 24, 1954, in Haifa. He attended Kishon Elementary School and completed his high school studies in his hometown. Eliahu was a diligent and industrious student and excelled in subjects related to Orientalism: Arabic and the history of the Middle East. Thanks to his knowledge and experience, he took special examinations in the framework of the IDF and was granted permission to continue his studies in these subjects at the Hebrew University, but he suddenly changed his mind and announced that he preferred to serve in the IDF immediately upon his enlistment. Eliahu was a sociable youth and was well integrated into various societies and circles, even different in character and origin. He was a good son and devoted to his family and was always willing to help his brother. Eliahu was drafted into the IDF at the end of November 1972 and was assigned to the Intelligence Corps and after completing basic training, he completed a course for noncoms and was assigned to a field unit in Sinai, where he was trained and given the rank of corporal. He was a dedicated soldier and a loyal friend, and he did well in his job. His future was guaranteed to him in the framework of his military service, and he loved the role and the area in which he served. According to his commanders, when the war broke out, he devoted all his efforts to fulfilling the tasks assigned to him and did even more than the demands of the position. He made a great effort and was not deterred by difficulties. On the 20th of Cheshvan 5734 (15.11.1973), Eliyahu fell in the line of duty and was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl, leaving behind his parents and brothers.
