Broder, Eliyahu

Son of Malka and Meir, was born on January 30, 1926, in Vilna, Poland, and immigrated to Israel with his parents in 1935. In his quick understanding, his talents and good behavior he was one of the best students at the Geula school and later at the Ma’aleh school in Jerusalem, and was very fond of his teachers. Oral knowledge of more than a hundred pages of Talmud and sand studies was successful. When his mother died when he was 17, he began working as a clerk in various places and recently in Paritzky’s pharmacy. His mother’s death always hurt him. During the Second World War he volunteered for the Jewish Brigade, despite his youth, and served for a year in Europe. At the beginning of the War of Independence he volunteered again for active duty, was stationed in a company of the “Moriah” battalion in Jerusalem and volunteered for the most difficult and dangerous missions in the defense of Talpiot, Ramat Rachel, Makor Hayim and so on. He was Simcha to defend Gush Etzion, too, although he knew about the great danger and volunteered for operations in the most dangerous areas. On May 12, the Legion forces, with the help of local masses, carried out a heavy attack on the Gush and succeeded in separating it into two. The next day the enemy continued its attack on Kfar Etzion, and on that day it fell on the day of the 4th of Iyar 5708 (13.5.1948) in the defense of the monastery in front of Kfar Etzion, on the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949) Military operation at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
