Brill, Joseph (‘Yossi’)
Son of Isidor and Rachel. He was born on the 12th of Tishrei 5747 (12.10.1955) in Santiago, the capital of Chile. At the age of five, Yossi (then: Jayusa) entered the elementary school and was considered an outstanding student of his class. In his character and behavior, he also stood out from an early age and won twice, on behalf of the school, with a medal – as a reward for discovering the most class-friendly attitude in the class. Yossi grew up in a warm Jewish home, and at the age of seven he joined the Dror youth movement. Four years later he became a devoted member of Hanoar Hazioni. When he completed his elementary studies, he moved to high school – the National Gymnasium – one of the highest-level educational institutions in Chile. In this institution, too, he continued to do well in his studies. At the beginning of 1971 Yossi joined a group of youths who made their way to Israel through Youth Aliyah. These boys were his good friends until his death. At first Yossi studied at the Youth Aliyah studio at Kibbutz Reshefim in the Beit Shean Valley. He called the kibbutz and saw his home there. From there he was sent to the Gilboa educational institution in Beit Alpha, where, after two years, he was taking his matriculation exams. In the meantime, his family immigrated to Israel. The conditions of acclimatization in the kibbutz and in the educational institution were not easy for boys who came from the distant continent and lived there under welfare conditions and indulgences. However, while some of his friends complained a great deal, Yossi showed remarkable adaptability and easily overcame difficulties. He wanted to succeed and become an integral part of the new environment. Was a modest, shy boy, and made no attempt to stand out among the guys. At the same time, he knew how to protect his rights. Yossi was an avid fan of music. He also worked in various fields of art, such as painting and handicrafts. His ambition was to acquire higher education at the university and prepared himself for this purpose. Yossi was drafted into the IDF in early February 1974. He was first assigned to the Armored Corps, where he underwent basic training, then transferred to the Israel Air Force and completed courses in the field of communications systems. He also passed a course for leadership and for a short period of time was employed as a driver. Was a disciplined and disciplined soldier – “one of the most talented and loving young men of all of us” – as his commander said after his death. On the 25th of Shevat 5736 (25.1.1976) he was a victim of an accident and fell while carrying out his duties. He was laid to rest in the cemetery in Rishon Letzion. Survived by his parents, sister and brother
