Brand, Yehoshua Hacohen


Son of Menia and Pinchas was born on February 16, 1925 in Hanover, Germany, and immigrated to Israel with his parents in 1933. His parents’ home was a religious home, steeped in Jewish tradition. Yehoshua studied in the elementary school in Haifa and when he graduated he studied the profession of car electrical engineering. He worked for two years in his profession. When he was 16, he joined the religious Scouts and began to work there. He was close to the working class. He joined the Gadna and was soon sent to a course for commanders in Ruhama and Kfar Menahem. He later joined the Jewish settlement police. Yehoshua served for a year as a guard in the Jordan Valley, then returned to Haifa and studied in the field of electrical engineering. He began to bear the burden of supporting the family in his work in a workshop for electric cars. In addition to studying the subject he acquired a high school education at evening classes near the Technion. In 1945, he joined the army and joined the occupation of Betzet, Akko, and Tzemach, and in the Jenin Battalions, and Operation Brosh to eliminate the Syrian bridgehead In the Mishmar Hayarden area, Yehoshua was sent to the Armored Corps course and successfully completed it. He joined one of the companies in the brigade, took command of the religious department of the company and became the company’s deputy commander, commander and an excellent military instructor. It combined strictness and discipline on the one hand and generosity and understanding of others on the other. On October 22, 1948, Kaukji forces captured the Sheikh Abed outpost near Manara. On the 20th of Tishrei 5749 (23.10.1948), he was sent to take the outpost back, was wounded in the battle and died of his wounds.Joshua was brought to rest at the military cemetery in Rosh Pinna.
