Bornstein, Zvi (Zvika)


Zvika, son of Fruma and Menashe Bornstein, was born in the city of Schulz, Poland in 1921, There he studied and acquired the profession of plumbing. When World War Two broke out, he escaped to the Soviet Union. In 1944, while Zvika was still in the Soviet Union, he married Hava. At the end of the war, the young couple returned to Poland and from there they traveled to Eretz Yisrael via Czechoslovakia and the DP Camps in Austria. In early 1948, the young family arrived in Israel and settled in Haifa. Shortly before their arrival, the War of Independence had broken out so Zvika was drafted to the 23rd Battalion of the Carmeli Brigade, which fought in the north of Israel. Five months after immigrating to Israel, on the 25th of Av; August 30, 1948, Zvika fell in battle. He was buried in the military cemetery in Rosh Pina. His son was born only one day after his fall and was named after him.
