Biton, Yaish

Yaish, son of Rachel and Habib, was born in 1949 in Morocco, and in 1963 the family immigrated to Israel and settled in Kiryat Shmona, He completed a truck driver course and served as a driver for the entire period of his service. Ya’ish was sensitive and vulnerable by nature, and not easily found his place among a crowd of people. But in the army he joined his friends well. Together with them, he participated in the pursuit of terrorists, and once he even had the opportunity to catch a terrorist – a story that happened to be known to the family. Yaish was not one of the talkers and he did not publicize his exploits. On his release certificate, he received a good assessment from his commander, who wrote: “Yaish was a quiet and dedicated soldier who did his job efficiently and quickly integrated into the company in which he was staying.” At the beginning of February 1972, Yaish completed his regular service. In the Yom Kippur War, Yaish was called to join his unit in the Golan Heights. His brother says: “Before he left, he had a vague feeling that he would not return, but that he was always very sensitive and we did not accept his prophecies with due seriousness.” On the 19th of Tishrei 5734 (October 19, 1973), Yaish fell in battle in the Golan Heights. He was brought to eternal rest in the Kiryat Shmona cemetery. Survived by a mother and seven brothers and sisters. After his fall, he was promoted to corporal.
