Biro, Daniel

Daniel, son of Fruma and Yeshayahu, was born on February 16, 1952 in Haifa, Danny was drafted into the IDF in early August 1970 and assigned to the Armored Corps, and after completing his basic training course, completing his tank training course and a course for tank commanders, he was posted as a noncom in the Armored Corps unit. In the army, Danny was loved by his soldiers and commanders alike. His friends appreciated his inner calm, which did not stop even in times of distress. Thanks to his pleasant manner he made many friends who were willing to go with him and for him everywhere. In the daily life of the camp, Danny helped his friends and subordinates in adapting to the army, took an interest in all of them and their families, and even visited their homes during his vacations. His friends described him as a person with an excellent sense of humor and a healthy and optimistic approach to life, who always found the way to reach effective solutions, both in personal and professional matters. Everything seemed easy and simple under his hands, even when at first it seemed that there was no way out and the ground slipped underfoot. Danny became a sergeant who gave up comfort for others, and at difficult times everyone knew that if they turned to him he would do his best, stay in their place on duty, or observe the Sabbath. He did everything with restraint and self-control, without any difficulty in giving up his desires. On vacation, Danny liked to come to his parents’ house, talk to them and spend time with them and with his little sister, whom he loved very much. He also traveled extensively in Israel, when he had time, and visited his friends in the rear and his friends in the army. Danny planned to continue his studies at the Technion after completing his regular service, but about two weeks after completing his mandatory service, the Yom Kippur War broke out and he was called to the tank. Danny participated in the difficult battles against the Egyptians on the Sinai front. On the 8th of Tishrei 5734 (October 8, 1973), in a difficult battle in the Kantara Pituitary, in the northern sector of the Suez Canal, Danny escaped to help a survivor who had emerged from a burning tank, and both were hit by a missile and killed. He was brought to eternal rest in the Haifa cemetery. Survived by his parents and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to First Sergeant. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the commander of his unit wrote: “As a commander of a reconnaissance battalion in an armored formation, I was proud to command your son, Sergeant Biru Daniel … a good fighter and without fear …”
