Birman, Arye (“Lionchka”)
Arye (Leyuchenka) Birma son of-Mordechai-Yosef and Fania. was born on October 12, 1927, in a small village near Balatz a district town in Bessarabia. In the summer of 1941, the parents were deported to Siberia and Aryeh and his sister were apprehended and taken to a children’s home. In 1945 he returned home and the following year he set out on his way to Israel, but his ship ran aground before it fell to the British. He spent eleven months in a youth camp in Cyprus until he arrived in Israel in November 1947. After a month in Atlit, Arye finally left for freedom of the homeland. He was only twenty years old at the time. Arye found work and was happy after the suffering and agony throughout his life. As the War of Independence intensified, he enlisted and took part in various actions and left the country safely. On the 1st of Adar 5702 (18.2.1950) Arye fell while fulfilling his duties and was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
