Birk, Silvia

Daughter of Frania and Shlomo, was born on 9.10.1923 in London, the capital of Britain. Silvia attended elementary and high school and was educated in the spirit of national Judaism. At the age of nine, she joined the Habonim youth movement and, at the outbreak of World War II, headed a large youth battalion in East London and excelled in caring for children during the major bombardments. She was later transferred as a counselor in a home for children being evacuated from London, organized by the Habonim youth movement. She underwent pioneering training on the movement’s farm and was later entrusted with the activities of the younger stratum in all of Britain and excelled in the work; She edited and published the newspaper “The Builder” to the young layer and wrote in it. Later, she worked as the coordinator of the Department of Education and Youth of the Jewish National Fund in England, and her activities encompassed about 1,000 teachers, 500 youth counselors and 35,000 students and students in Jewish educational institutions. She produced informative material and help books for teachers and stories and fascinating pictures and games for children about Eretz Israel. When she immigrated to Israel in July 1946, she underwent a major course in Hebrew and was later accepted to work in the Hadassah youth services. Joined the Haganah and during the War of Independence belonged to the news service. Silvia was killed and killed on 26 Iyar 5708 (June 4, 1948) when the Arab Legion bombarded Jerusalem and was buried in Sheik Bader A.
