Bernstein, Nava


Daughter of Shlomo and Ofira. She was born on December 20, 1954, in Moshav Avihail. She attended the local elementary school. She continued and completed her studies at the Ron High School in Tel Aviv. Nava’s childhood took place in Moshav Avihayil, where she is aware of the flora and fauna. As a lively and inquisitive child she wondered about the lifestyle of animals and the nature of plants and flowers. For many hours she devoted herself to the care of domestic animals and plant cultivation. Since childhood, she has been a nature lover, and as a teenager she was active in the Gadna, loved to travel in Israel and was impressed by her landscapes and beauty, very honest, conscientious and serious in her approach to life. Thanks to her good qualities Even after she moved to Tel Aviv, she often visited the moshav and used to spend her holidays there with her friends and friends, and was drafted into the IDF in mid-March 1973. She was an excellent soldier, responsible and devoted to work, punctual, meticulous and well organized. Her commanders appreciated her very much, and when she completed her compulsory service and expressed her desire to continue in the career army, she recommended her acceptance with joy and will. She was then awarded the rank of First Sergeant and she continued her previous work. After a while she asked to study in the officers’ course and her commanders again recommended that she be sent to the course. She completed the course successfully, and on September 5, 1975, she was awarded the rank of assistant lieutenant. For her activities during the Yom Kippur War, she was awarded the ‘Yom Kippur War’. On December 18, 1975, Nava was injured in a road accident. She was transferred to Ichilov Hospital, where she died of her wounds after eight days. She was laid to rest in the cemetery in Moshav Avihail. Survived by her parents, sister and brother. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the unit commander wrote: “The sorrow and pain over the death of Nava, who died in a road accident, are too great to express in words. I met Nava for a year, as an officer whom the love of the army and the love of man guided her in all her actions. Her help in fulfilling the tasks of the unit was great and important, but above all it had its special characteristics – punctuality, loyalty, honesty and joy of life and creativity. I am sorry that it was taken from you and from us. I salute Nava’s memory “
