Berlin, Simcha


Son of Meir. Born in 1897 in Riga, capital of Latvia, then part of Czarist Russia. Simcha was a gifted and talented student. He successfully graduated from high school in his hometown, traveled to Switzerland, continued his studies at the university and was certified as an agronomist engineer. He was a member of the Zionist Association Gedera. In 1920 he immigrated to Eretz Israel and joined the “Dvinsk” group, which prepared itself for settlement. Like other members of the group, Simcha joined the Haganah and in the wake of the riots of May 1921 he was sent by the Hagana to the defenders of the Neveh Shalom neighborhood on the Jaffa-Tel Aviv border which was attacked by Arab rioters, on the 23rd of Nisan (1/5/1921), he was killed and brought to eternal rest in a mass grave in the old cemetery in Tel Aviv.
