Berkovits, Izar (Pusto)


Izar, son of Sirena and Pinchas Berkovits, was born on 14.9.1923 in the city of Oradea-Mare, Transylvania, Romania. In May 1946 he traveled to Germany to immigrate to Eretz Israel and joined a kibbutz of “Hanoar Hazioni” and on April 29, 1948 traveled on the Kedma ship to the Haifa port. He was drafted into the ranks of the Golani Brigade and participated in the battles of Lubia, Sejera, Izar was killed by a shell during the fighting in Rafah, during Operation Horev to expel the Egyptian army from Israeli territoryon 3 Tevet, 4.1.1949, and was buried on the border. On the 16th of Av 5709 (August 11, 1949) he was put to rest in the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
