Bergman, Gerald


Gerald (Jerry), son of Rose and Robert, was born on December 16, 1947, in the city of Washington, DC In 1961 he came to Israel with his mother, sister, and younger brother. Gerald was drafted into the IDF at the end of October 1967, underwent basic training in the Nahal Brigade, was assigned to the Armored Corps School and completed a course in Armored Corps and Instructor Course. In early March 1970, Jerry was given a special holiday and he married his girlfriend Miriam. After his return to the army, he received a high-ranking officer’s course in armor, and his commander wrote: “A responsible and dedicated soldier fulfilled his duties to the full satisfaction of his commanders.” At the end of October 1970, Jerry was released from the IDF and returned home to Ganigar. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, Jerry went to his unit stationed in Sinai. In the Battle of the Chinese Farm on October 16, 1973, Jerry was killed by a bullet, standing with half his body exposed in the commander’s turret, helping to command the tank whose commander had been killed the night before. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery at Ginnegar, where he left behind a wife and daughter, parents, sister and brother, was promoted to the rank of sergeant,
