Berber, Shlomo


Son of Shifra and Yitzhak, was born on 28.5.1929 in Jerusalem and since his childhood grew up in Kiryat-Avoda (Holon). Where he attended kindergarten and completed the school. His desire to continue his studies at the customs school was met with material difficulty because his father was then confined to bed for a year and a half due to a road accident, but Shlomo found advice: he began working as an apprentice in a metalwork shop in Holon with little pay. Three times a week he used to go to school in the evenings despite his exhaustion and work, and all his evenings and rest days were devoted to his activities, his training and trips to the Gadna, which he joined at the age of 13. In these difficult circumstances, He devoted his first salary as an expert worker to a surprise gift to his parents, and afterward he would surprise them with gifts generously. From childhood, he was recognized for his organizational ability and leadership and a good friend. Was honest and loyal at work and could stand firm on his rights. Upon the outbreak of the War of Independence, he moved to Hayash and served in one of the Givati ​​Brigade battalions. He successfully passed the war of positions in Jabalya and Tel A-Rish, volunteering to guard at the Lod airport when it was full of Arab and English guards, And he managed to bring useful things to the Israeli Air Force from there, and bravely faced the dangers and during his brief visits to the home, he tried to calm his parents and explain to them what was the duty of a young man in Israel. In praise of his devotion and his spirit as a fighter and as a helper to the wounded in the deadly fire Detainees B, near Latrun, and on the morning of May 13, a heavy bombardment of the “Rescue Army” artillery was fired, and the force was forced to withdraw, and Shlomo remained with friends to cover the retreats. On Wednesday, May 13, 1948, Before the Yishuv was informed of the declaration of the Hebrew state. His burial place is unknown. A monument in his memory was erected in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. In June 2005, as part of the investigation of the missing persons unit in the IDF, Shlomo was buried in a mass grave along with Yoram Kaplan (Yehuda, Jerry) and Mendel Mat in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in a grave that is associated with the 32nd Battalion.
