Ben-Or, Gila
Daughter of Menachem and Naomi. Born in Jerusalem on 24 November 1956. She studied at the elementary school in Ein Karem and continued her studies at the Kiryat Yehuda Regional High School in Kiryat Anavim, where her classmates loved her classmates She was a member of the Scouts youth movement and later became a counselor, and was also a member of the Betar youth movement in Ramat Raziel. She was a sports fan and excelled at swimming. She devoted her spare time to trips around the country and to animal and plant research. Her friends recall Gilo’s smile and point out her kindness, her love for everything – her friends, her parents, the landscape and nature and life in general. “She was a wonderful friend, good, loving and loyal, helpful and encouraging when needed and succeeds in one smile to improve a bad feeling and make everything look good again.” This is how her friend Orna writes; “We have always admired her tremendous ability to enjoy everything, to make close connections and to do so much,” she said in her memoirs: “We were always filled with love and love.” When she was 17, Gila went on a trip abroad and returned home full of life. Gila was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in November 1975. After completing basic training, she was sent to the Gadna base in Sde Boker, where she served as an instructor and was very successful in her job. 1977 (26.6.1977) Gila fell during her service. She was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. Survived by her parents, three brothers and three sisters. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, her commanding officer wrote: “Gila was a girl with a very rich life experience, a wild, sober and purposeful nature, and she loved to feel that she could change things and lead thoughts and actions in the direction she believed in. It was an inexhaustible source of strength for her ability and talent in training. ” Her family established in her memory a reference library for nature, with a selection of landscape and nature books, science and biology – subjects she loved and devoted to her time and lecturer.
