Ben-Mordechai, Asher
Son of Sara and Mordechai, was born in 1920 in the city of Sharpez, Poland. He was the son of pious parents, merchants. He received his early education at home, went on to study at the Tarbut Hebrew school, and as a youngster joined the Po’aley Zion Left. With the outbreak of the Second World War he went with the influx of refugees to Russia and joined the Polish army in exile and arrived with him in 1944. Upon his arrival he changed his name to son of-Mordechai in memory of his father. He spent some time at Kibbutz Beit Ha’arava; He then moved to Tel Aviv and worked as a construction worker. At the outbreak of the War of Independence he enlisted immediately and served in the Oded Brigade. He was lightly wounded and sent for treatment but not rest until he was returned to his place on the northern front. In the “Ten Days” battles, our forces seized Tel Azzayat. The Syrians attacked the tel several times and at the time of repelling one of the attacks, he fell on the 17th of Tammuz 5708 (17.7.1948) and was buried in the rest of Dan, he was the last survivor of a family of seven who were exterminated in the Great Holocaust. On the 14th of Adar 5703 (March 3, 1950) he was transferred to the eternal rest of the military cemetery in Haifa.
